2026 Declared the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Considering a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Frogs are anything but new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. However, their prevalence has noticeably surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are bona fide amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this phenomenon, I conducted a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a marked uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's growing prominence in the public consciousness is partially evident elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the trend in gaming appears uniquely strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs possess built-in creative potential for game developers.

• Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
• Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues facilitate a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

Several the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

When these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be on the verge of a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
