Demise of the Era for Manual Motorists? More Learners Opt for Automatic Cars in Exams

Approximately one in each four licensing exams in Great Britain are now being taken in automatic cars, per recent statistics, as motorists choose more eco-friendly cars and avoid manual transmissions.

Rising Movement Toward Self-Shifting Cars

Statistics reveal that nearly half a million of the approximately 1.8 million driving tests taken in Great Britain during the past year were conducted in automatic vehicles.

Insurer a major driving organization said the movement is being driven by the United Kingdom's ban on new gasoline and diesel vehicles coming in the next decade.

A driving school executive, a senior leader of AA's driving school, said that the need to know how to drive a manual transmission car is becoming "unnecessary for a growing number."

To get a full driving licence for the UK, a motorist must successfully complete their assessment in a car with manual gears.

Should the test is undertaken in an self-shifting car, the driver would get a restricted certification, restricting them to driving cars with self-shifting gearbox only.

The expert added that motorists and students are "feeling secure with the concept of their automotive future being electronically powered."

"As we head closer to the year 2030 and the ban on the sale of new combustion cars, increasing numbers of student drivers will want to learn in an eco-friendly car as that's all they will plan to drive."

Subsequent to the political race recently, the current administration pledged to bring back the fossil fuel vehicle restriction to the year 2030, after previous prime minister the previous administration postponed it to 2035.

Cost Perks

The lower day-to-day running costs of eco-friendly cars is also enticing to numerous people.

EVs can be significantly more expensive than a combustion engine vehicle or a hybrid at purchase, but the cost disparity is narrowing.

Furthermore, those with battery-powered vehicles can expect to reduce expenditures on gas and repairs expenses.

Educator Perspective

Sue Howe, the owner of a driving academy in a UK town, said that self-shifting vehicles are "the future" as the automotive sector shifts to eco-friendly cars.

For trainees, the instructor said, automatics can make the test simpler, as "it requires less coordination."

Novice motorists can "ruin a gearbox and a clutch," the instructor added, stating that anxiety may cause them to shut down the motor.

She also pointed out the shift was beneficial for traffic safety as "people are less tired" driving an automatic.

"It reduces the workload - it's fewer tasks for the motorist to do so they can pay closer attention on the traffic."

Numerical Growth

Drivers attitudes toward electric vehicles have shifted quickly in just the last decade.

The number of licensing exams conducted in automatic cars was 87,844 in the early 2010s, or 6.12% of total exams, based on the statistics.

That number jumped to nearly 480,000 in the 2024-2025 period, the last period with complete data, or twenty-six percent.

A leading organization is predicting that 29% of each assessment will be taken in self-shifting cars in 2025/26.

Profile Shifts

The figures also showed that an increasing number of males are choosing to take their tests in automatic cars.

In 2012/13, just over 23% of learners taking assessments in automatic vehicles were male drivers. Last year, that figure was over 39 percent.

The pass rate for self-shifting vehicles recently was slightly lower than for stick-shift vehicles. Nevertheless, the disparity has decreased since the year 2012.
