Dan was 17 years old when he encountered then 21-year-old the assailant in the city of Norwich in the year 2004, and their interaction became his earliest partnership.

One Saturday night in the May of 2004, the pair had been at a barbecue when Gilder consumed excessive alcohol and instructed Dan to drive him home.

At about midnight, the perpetrator instructed Dan to stop the car on a secluded street near the local hospital in Gorleston.

Gilder attacked Dan and resulted in significant internal harm which caused him being taken to the hospital thrice that summer.

Deeply affected, Dan was managed to drive Gilder home before returning to his mom’s home.

“I remained in bed for an extended period wondering, ‘what took place? what was that?’,” he explained.

The following September, Dan contacted the police and reported the incident.

Dan said he had provided a statement at the time, but it stalled any furthermore because he was “in poor health at that point”.

His family members and additional relatives did not know he was a member of the LGBTQ+ community, he mentioned.

“Society was distinct back then,” he commented.

Presently, the survivor serves as a project lead for the government sector, but he had earlier been employed in a prison, where he said he would often suppress teardrops when prisoners discussed their own mistreatment.

The survivor also mentioned he was attacked on the job, which also led to recurring memories.

“Then the jury service. Flashbacks back to the violation again. It was a continuous loop that had to end,” he expressed.

The witnesses who helped secure a conviction in the 2018 hearing in which he was a juror were “empowering”, in the words of Dan.

“It was profoundly impactful to see them going up and sharing their accounts and dealing with the difficult questions being directed at them,” he commented.

“I was working at the airport as an immigration officer at this time, and I had to take a three-week absence sick.

“It was then that I again disclosed [the attack] to the authorities and I asked them to advance the case for me, which they agreed to,” he continued.

Two detectives from Norfolk Police were tasked with Dan’s case in 2018, and it proceeded to a formal accusation and court case at the crown court in late 2023.

Within his personal statement, Dan detailed how he had been found to have complex PTSD (PTSD) associated with the assault.

“I endured, and still have, recurring contemplations of self-harm,” he expressed.

A quarter of adult women and about 6% of adult men have been subject to sexual violence, or attempted violation, as per the national crime survey.

A recent study found that nearly half of 180 individuals who were subjected to disturbing content in court reported signs resembling PTSD.

“Past trauma experiences, psychological challenges and immediate stress responses during a hearing can worsen emotional and stress reactions,” the study authors explained.

Mother expresses pride and anger
The survivor’s parent, the mother, stated “a fury existed like a fire burning inside me” when she confronted her the perpetrator

During that year, The survivor’s parent spoke to the assailant when he appeared to check on her son in hospital after Dan had told her what had happened.

“There was a rage like a fire burning within me. I was so angry,” she stated.

The individual exited and it was the ultimate instance she encountered him.

While talking to her son, she said: “I experienced great pride of you for sticking by what you had faith in and seeing it through. It was rightful vindication. You’d strived intensely.

“Mentally it had deeply affected on you and we could witness how you struggled.”

The survivor explained his present role as an on-call firefighter for firefighting services had assisted in the healing process.

“Serving the public has given me something to direct energy toward and exist for,” he said.

The survivor noted he now cared for his pets, cycling and exploring new places.

From May onward he has initiated production of digital content about his story and posts them on online platforms, where he now has 12,000 followers on the social platform.
