Over two dozen Olympic medal winners, trainers and additional world-class competitors have put their names to a statement demanding a stop to the capital punishment of a champion boxer and instructor, who is facing execution in Iran.
Amid rising worldwide anger over the country's expanding employment of executions as a means of suppression, the forcefully phrased statement condemns the government's decision to uphold the capital punishment of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.
Vafaei Sani, thirty, from Mashhad in north-east Iran, was detained for taking part in national uprisings in two thousand nineteen and indicted of backing an opposition group. He has endured five years in prison, where he has been tortured and kept in isolation.
“Sport is intended to promote hope, unity, and bravery,” the signatories wrote. “The execution of a champion for his beliefs is a blatant attack on these values and a warning to any competitor who dares to voice opinions.
The statement pointed out that Vafaei Sani’s circumstances was part of a pattern and highlighted Iran’s past of sentencing to death sports champions for their views, for example a football captain, leader of the national football team, and Fourouzan Abdi, leader of the national women’s volleyball team. In 2020, Navid Afkari, a 27-year-old national wrestling champion, faced the death penalty.
Other supporters to the letter comprise a sailing champion, who skippered the first female-only team in a round-the-world competition and was the pioneering lady to receive a renowned nautical honor; the ex- skipper of the national squad a sports advocate; and a footballer, who was in the country's selection for the global tournament.
The athlete was detained in the spring of 2020. The accusations against him comprised “promoting decay on Earth through fire-setting and ruin of government belongings”. His verdict has been annulled multiple times but on the fourth of October it was upheld on the third attempt. His legal proceedings was condemned as “highly unjust” by advocates and groups.
The urging to halt the boxer's capital punishment follows a earlier appeal to the UN high commissioner for human rights, endorsed by more than a hundred human rights experts and organizations, calling for measures to stop the competitor's capital punishment.
Based on reports, there is an “death penalty surge in Iran, which has attained horrific proportions”. In two thousand twenty-three, authorities executed at least over 850 people – a forty-eight percent increase on 2022. In the prior period, statistics showed nine hundred seventy-two capital punishments, marking the highest number since the year 2015. In excess of hundreds of people have been executed so far in the current year.
Dissidents and dissidents are targets, especially in the aftermath of the the year 2022 uprising. Experts say the regime have employed the executions to suppress opposition, create fear among the population and reinforce their grip on rule.
