Throughout this animated journey aimed at tweens, the world of fairies is dedicated to gathering teeth from slumbering children and leaving treasure under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only slightly more curious about the financial workings of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who supply gold as payment. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the ugly gnome he expected.
Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of young love (though it’s very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from each other, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings together. The two species portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the other. Fairies are supposed to be entitled types, given to taking anything they want, while the goblins are reportedly stupid, smelly, and primitive, but are in fact intelligent and advanced in technology.
Of course, this scenario needs a shared foe to join forces against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.
You won’t find all that many animated films targeting the viewer group that is starting to experience first crushes, but are not mature enough for whatever teenagers are watching in lieu of Twilight. If your child falls into this age group, it probably won’t to be their next favorite movie, but you could do worse.
A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
