United Kingdom Extends Methanol Poisoning Alert List with An additional 11 Countries

The UK government has placed 11 further countries to its official advisory list about the risks of methanol poisoning from contaminated spirits.

This updated travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Just last month, the government had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, after multiple notable incidents such as the fatal death of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can cause vision loss or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol typically employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not intended for human consumption.

Although it is naturally produced during the production of beverages, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for ingestion through the distillation process.

But in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and since it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.

Official Guidance for Travellers

Foreign Office official the minister stated that all travellers should be aware of the symptoms of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"If you're having drinks overseas, choose reputable establishments and refrain from homemade alcohol or free shots," the minister advised.

"Should anything appears suspicious, for example a fatigue that's far more intense than normal or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor right away."
