Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the option to contest specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
